The Vorotek O Scope head-mounted microscope: mobility, speed, convenience
The origins of the Vorotek O Scope head-mounted microscope are in Australia. ENT specialist John Vorrath developed it to complement the large, unwieldy and mostly single-site fixed microscope.
He found that for some patient groups (such as Australia’s indigenous people) he needed to be able to offer hospital care outside the hospital and developed a mobile version of the fixed microscope.
The Vorotek O Scope uses an ingenious mirror system to reduce the pupil distance or IPD to 12mm so that you can see with both eyes so binocularly to the back of a tunnel such as an ear or nose.
Unlike magnifying glasses, the O Scope allows you to see with both eyes to the back of the ear and nose:
The magnification is around 2x which is enough to do around 70% of an ENT doctor’s daily activities.Furthermore, instead of a focal point like with the fixed microscope , you have a focus area of 10 cm, useful for patients who move around a lot.
Working with the Vorotek O Scope is intuitive; you set it up and you’re good to go. Moreover, because of the large focus area, you always stay in focus. This makes working with the Vorotek O Scope much faster and easier than with the large fixed microscope.
You simply fold the binocular portion out of sight when not needed and then the O Scope functions as an excellent surgical headlamp.
