Invisible-In-Canal (IIC) Fitters increasingly choose the head-borne microscope
An IIC hearing aid is the smallest type of custom-made hearing aid available. It is placed deep in the ear canal, just in front of the eardrum – so deep that it is virtually invisible from the outside.
The 6 main features of IIC hearing aids:
- Very discreet – completely in the ear, usually not visible.
- Custom-made – via an ear impression or 3D scan of the ear canal.
- Suitable for mild to moderate hearing losses (typically up to about 70 dB).
- Small battery, so relatively short lifespan.
- Not suitable for narrow ear canals, a lot of earwax, or severe hearing loss.
Often not rechargeable due to small size
“Fitting” in places and adjusting an ICC hearing aid such as the Phonak Lyric is traditionally often done with the large fixed binocular microscope. Similar to the microscope used by an ENT doctor, but with less magnification.
With this large fixed microsccop, you really have to learn how to work and build up experience. Moreover, this microscope is capital intensive. That often creates a barrier for new ICC fitters.
Recently, the mobile alternative has become available in Europe: the Vorotek O Scope. This head-borne microsccop provides great binocular vision, you learn to work with it quickly and is available at only a fraction of the cost.
Why Lapperre in Belgium chose the Vorotek O Scope:
"We are now no longer purchasing fixed microscopes for new Phonak Lyric locations in Belgium. The Vorotek O Scope head-mounted 3D microscope is an excellent alternative: we can perform the same operations with it but are mobile and can flexibly change fitting rooms and lose less space. Furthermore, you learn to work with the Vorotek O Scope very quickly, it is easy to use, much faster to set up than the fixed microscope, and you easily adapt to client movements." The Vorotek O Scope allows you to quickly and cost-effectively scale up the "Phonak Lyric Fitting" capacity within your store(s).
Quickly add additional capacity at busy times, use the O Scope as a base for additional Lyric fitting branches or work off-site.Ivan Dierickx - Audiology & Medical Operations Director, Sonova Retail Belgium & Lapperre NV
